What is Babbel good at?

Babbel's courses are carefully sequenced and written by language teachers, and its strongest languages (Spanish, French, Italian, German) go up to upper intermediate. If you are learning one of its 14 languages and are happy to pay from the start, it is a solid, calm course without the game mechanics of Duolingo.

What does Vocabbie do differently?

Every Vocabbie lesson is a conversation. The app writes a few lines, asks a question, and the reply under your answer says what the words meant and whether it worked. New words show up on cards first, and the ones you fumble come back sooner. You can also talk to it in the language you are learning, and it answers in that language.

The language list is the other difference. Vocabbie has written courses for Finnish, Spanish, Croatian, German, French, Italian and Swedish, and writes lessons on the fly for 83 more, so a second language does not mean a second app.

Who should use which?

Pick Babbel if your language is one of its 14 and you want a teacher-written course with no game in it.

Pick Vocabbie if you are learning Finnish or Croatian, if you want a free plan you can keep using, or if you would rather learn by answering in a chat. See all courses.
